What Does Research Show About Sage?

Sage contains flavonoids -- plant compounds that have medicinal properties. Some of these compounds appear to improve brain health and guard against diseases like Alzheimer's. In one study of mice, sage extract improved memory.

Smudging (burning herbs and plant resins for medicinal and spiritual use) has been used since ancient times for healing and to clear the build up of emotional or spiritual negativity.

Smudging is often viewed as some sort of magical practice, however recent studies have shown that there is scientific evidence that medicinal smoke is a powerful antiseptic that can purify the air of 94% of harmful bacteria for up to 24 hours.

The electromagnetic field (aura) around our body, as well as the energy in our environment, can become blocked with harmful positive ions that can make us feel fatigued, sluggish and burnt out.

Burning sage or other herbs neutralizes the positive charge and releases large amounts of negative ions into the atmosphere. This means that our own energy, and the energy around us, will feel lighter and freer.

It is also the reason that we feel like we could “cut the tension with a knife” during an argument, or if someone is in a bad mood. A build up of positive ions due to stress, anger or any form of tension releases positive ions and causes the energy around us to become stagnant.

Burning herbs turns the positive ions back to negative ones, and therefore, the practice purifies and cleanses the atmosphere.

Although smudging and similar practices have been classed as “new age” or dismissed as fantasy or spiritual nonsense by those attempting to discredit them, research is scientifically proving that there are great benefits to the rituals that the Native Americans (along with many other indigenous groups) have inherently known of and practiced with faith throughout time.

Burning herbs is a popular method of purification in many religions and cultures.

Growing up with religion, I became accustomed to smudging, as frankincense was burned in churches. Incense is commonly burned in Asia and in Buddhist temples (read here), and the Incas burned palo santo wood. It has been a tradition in South America for hundreds of years.

The Native Americans ritualistically smudge using sacred herbs, and their technique is known as the Sacred Smoke Bowl Blessing.

The most common herbs used include cedar, sage, sweetgrass and tobacco—and they are known as the Four Manido.

Once the sacred plant is burned, the cloud of smoke that emanates is used to prepare for prayer ceremonies, rituals and purification.

Smudging is believed to heighten the sensitivity of healers, or the medicine men, so that they achieve an enhanced state of mind and can effectively assess and treat illness.

Not only is smudging used in spiritual practices, but it can also have medicinal benefits for those who are affected by poor air quality.

This means it can help those who suffer from asthma, headaches, lung problems and respiratory issues, as well as general coughs and colds.

Sage is one of the most popular herbs used for smudging.

The word sage stems from the Latin word salvia, which translates to “healthy” or “to heal.”

Studies have also shown that burning sage increases clarity and awareness, heightens wisdom, improves moods and enhances the memory and quickens the senses. (It is no coincidence that the word sage is also used to describe someone steeped in wisdom and humility.)

Sage is an ancient sacred herb used during sacred ceremonies and smudging rituals.

Traditional Native American smudging ceremonies use California White Sage, Dakota Sage, and Desert Sage.

White sage (Salvia apiana) is a plant native to high desert ecosystems and grows prevalently in California and in the Mountain West. 

White sage is considered a sacred, cleansing, purifying, and protective plant.

The leaves of the plant are a whitish-green, and if you rub the fresh leaves between your thumb and forefinger, a refreshing, cleansing scent is released.

Native Americans have a tradition of using Sacred Sage to ward off evils spirits and negative energies.

It is used in ceremonies to seek blessings of health and prosperity, banish spirits, and encourage protection. 

Sacred sage can amplify any clearing and protective techniques that you are already using.

As a plant, and a living being, sage also has a Spirit.

The Spirit of sage is dedicated to offering protection, blessings, and clearing. 

Sage Smudging is a ritual where the leaves of the Sage plant are burned, and the smoke is directed into and onto areas that are in need of clearing and protection.

Our luscious Seven Directions smudge sticks are a fine blend of New Mexico Sage, Sacred Cedar, Lavender, White Sage (Salvia Apiana), Sweetgrass, and Copal.

These are a wonderful smudge with special properties.

Seven Directions encompasses everything that exists, as it refers to the directionality of north, south, east, west, up, down and center and all that lies in each direction, plant, animal, rock, and tree.

We stand in the center of seven directions at all times, and therefore, we are in constant contact with all that is.

INVOKING THE SPIRIT DANCING WINDS OF THE SEVEN DIRECTIONS

Many native traditions invoke the directions using different words, power animals or spirit guides, and colors.

In the invocation, pay homage to the three worlds lower-Earth, upper –heaven and middle- shaman within.

Then, invoke the winds of the four portals, south, west, north and east. The fullness of this integration equals the seven directions.

Some cultures work mostly with the four portals and some salute even more; it is all good. Respect the beauty of each tradition.

The more you invoke the directions the more you will take on the rhythm of their quality.

Allow yourself to resonate with and hear the directions speaking their language through you; recognize their voices in the wind and make them your own.

The directions are spiraling energetic consciousness. They see you. They witness the movements of your life.

Beckon to these Winds to sanction the work that you are about to do, to provide protection, to call on the forces of all the medicine healers that have gone before and who make it possible for your own existence and healing work.

The Spirit Dancing Winds remind us that this work is bigger than us and that a vortex of energy accompanies our every endeavor.

The winds presence signals that you are being heard and what you call in with respect, may be made manifest.

When you need assistance, learn to call on a particular direction and its special attributes of power, that addresses your specific situation or need.

For example, if you are buying a house the south holds prosperity and planting seeds, the future. This direction can assist you in your endeavor.

Every religion speaks of angels, spirit guides, protectors, etc., that are housed in the portals.

Uriel, Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael are the angels who represent the four directions in the Hebrew tradition.

My invocation is called the dance of the seven directions and I have choreographed movements that flow with the feeling I experience with a particular direction.

Whirling counter-clockwise (this particular kind of whirling opens you to the realm of mystery) I invoke and feel for their presence and response.
